Activating CMe2100 LTE G2 for Encrypted SMS

Communication with the device must be encrypted to fulfill regulatory requirements. The encryption protocol (v1) uses AES-CTR for payload encryption, HKDF-derived per-message keys, and an 8-byte truncated HMAC-SHA256 for authentication. The encrypted frame is Base64URL encoded without padding. For more information, contact support@elvaco.com.

When delivered, the CMe2100 LTE G2 is in factory state. In this state, a factory communication key has been set. Before normal encrypted commands can be used, a new 16-character communication password must be set. The new password must be different from the factory communication key stored in the product, and is set using below command:

common.security.product.communication.password=<new 16 character key>

After this has been done, the default communication key is no longer accepted for normal commands.

Note

The product’s default communication key can be read from the NFC status record. This key is only intended for initial secure setup. For Elvaco Play installations, key handling is managed by Elvaco Play completely.

After the communication password has been set, commands must be encrypted with the new communication password. The default communication key is no longer accepted for normal communication.

Note

Encrypted communication protects commands and responses against unauthorized access and tampering.

Note

Encryption protocol v1 uses AES-CTR for payload encryption, HKDF-derived per-message keys, and an 8-byte truncated HMAC-SHA256 for authentication. The encrypted frame is Base64URL encoded without padding. For more information, contact support@elvaco.com.

Quick start-up using encrypted SMS

  • Deliver an e-mail Push Report at 00:00 each day.

To get the product started, use these default settings:

  • To set the e-mail recipient of the daily Push report, send the following command in Elvaco Play app. The product will send a response confirming that the recipient has been set.

    qset email [recipient]

  • To start the installation of the meters send the following command to the CMe2100 LTE G2. The product will respond with an SMS confirming that the installation has started, and an additional SMS when it has been completed.

Note

In the example above, the SMS messages are shown unencrypted. In a real installation, the communication is encrypted. Therefore, a separate system is required to encrypt outgoing SMS commands and decrypt incoming SMS responses.
